![]() Animation Block Party Valentine's Day 2005
Members of Animation Block Party Valentine jury included: Animation Block Party opened submissions for a Valentine festival in November of 2004. All festival entries were asked to have a "LOVE" theme. With the aid of withoutabox.com and the hard work of the Animation Block staff, over 400 submissions were processed and considered for the February 14th 2005 screening(s) at the BAM Rose Cinemas and Frank's Cocktail Lounge, both in Brooklyn, NY. Nearly 650 animation fans attended Animation Block Party's Valentine edition. The Valentine evening activities began at 5pm with the first of three screenings at the BAM Rose Cinemas and ended around 3am as Frank's Cocktail Lounge closed for the evening. The cold and rainy weather seemed to follow us from the end of summer 2004 Animation Block Party, but goodies from our sponsors eased the winter chill. Party perks included door prizes from Crumpler bags, giveaways from Animation Magazine, lots of Pabst Blue Ribbon, hundreds of Krispy Kreme of doughnuts and much more. On the second floor of Frank's Cocktail Lounge, the Animation Block after-party featured the talents of DJ Harry Ballz and Dynamic Damien, hosting their New York famous version of Hip-Hop Karaoke. The DJ crew completed their set with a perfect rendition of Notorious B.I.G's classic cut, Juicy. A week after the official event, the festival jury was able to get together at Les Sans Culottes on 57th and 2nd to review all the participating films. The jury included Jeff Scher, Howard Beckerman, Emily Hubley, Doug Crane and Machi Tantillo. For more than three hours, the jury debated all the animations over wine and dinner, eventually making some difficult choices, as all the films were first-rate. All festival winners received prizes from our aforementioned sponsors. See below for all the winners of festival honors. Other Valentine event sponsors included Boinx Software, NY Central Art Supply, The Village Voice and RES Magazine. Valentine's Festival Awards

Animation Block Party Premiere: Sept 9, 2004
Early in 2004, a group of New York based animators began hosting small screenings at bars and restaurants. As these events grew in size, it became obvious that an end of summer film festival was needed to capitalize on this mounting demand for a New York based Animation festival. The first official Animation Block Party premiered in Brooklyn on Sept 9th, 2004. The festival was curated by Casey Safron and exhibited professional and independent shorts, as well as the best recent animations from the top colleges in Manhattan (SVA, NYU, Parsons, etc). Even though the festival was not officially open for submissions, word of mouth resulted in over 150 entries from NYC and beyond. This introductory edition of Animation Block Party featured a rooftop screening, overlooking a beautiful cityscape. Just moments before the event began, the skies opened up and torrential rain plagued the outdoor venue. But within minutes, the sky cleared, seats were dried and nearly 300 fans magically appeared to watch almost two hours of award-winning animation. An after-party that roared all night long followed the screening. Some of the world's top independent and professional animators participated in and attended the festival, leading the obvious questions of what next... that question was answered soon after with the announcement of a Valentine's Day Animation Festival. Animation legends that contributed to the September 9th screening included Howard Beckerman, Bill Plympton, Irra Verbitsky, Emily Hubley and Don Duga. Other celebrated animators such as Jeff Scher, Matt Sheridan, Candy Kugel, Richard Gorey and Peter Sluskza also screened their personal shorts at the Block Party. See the entire September 9th program below. The event was sponsored by Krispy Kreme, Pabst Blue Ribbon and NY Central Art Supply. This screening was hosted by Officeops and the after-party was held at the Archive.
The September 9th, 2004 Animation Block Party received notice in New York Magazine, Animation World Network and Film Threat. Check out the top-five ranking below from New York Magazine.
